Dr Who – Still a major influence after almost 50 years

Dr Who, the popular BBC character, has been on our T.V. screens for nearly 50 years, and in his current, eleventh incarnation is more popular than ever before.

The current generation has completely embraced the longest running science fiction show in the world. The Doctor, a perpetual Time Lord, traverses time and space in his iconic time machine – The Tardis, looking unassuming in the guise of a traditional British Police Box. Ardent followers of the series remain both thrilled by the antics of The Dr and frightened in equal measure by his eternal adversaries; The Master, Daleks, Cybermen and others.

Dr Who originally first aired in 1963 and is the most successful science fiction series of all time. It is renowned for its imaginative stories, creative special effects (which were extremely low-budget in the 1960s and 70s) and pioneering use of electronic music (originally produced by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop). The show is a significant part of British popular culture, and elsewhere it has become a cult television favourite.
